St. John's Episcopal Church is an active parish in the Bridgeport Deanery and Connecticut Diocese with plans to spread the Gospel message to children and adults within the parish, the neighborhood and the community through worship and educational programs.
There is an excellent music program in place that we plan to nurture, expand and utilize, not only within the worship service but as part of our spiritual outreach as well.
Our expectation is that we can increase in number by attracting and incorporating new members and re-engaging those who have lapsed. We desire to become an icon of the Episcopal Church and a beacon of light and hope for the people of Bridgeport and its surrounding communities.
We look forward to meeting and worshiping with you.
St John’s is a community seeking to extend the ministry of Christ in a variety of ways, including the ministry of prayer for healing..
Having a Native American heritage, Bridgeport began in 1639 as the Indian village of Pequonnock. Attracted by the harbor facilities, colonists began to populate the area of Newfield and Stratford. Dissension among the early fathers resulted in the incorporation of the borough of Bridgeport on July 11, 1821 and eventually in 1836, the city of Bridgeport, named for the first drawbridge over the river, was incorporated. The large, protected, deep harbors of the Pequonnock River and Black Rock expanded into active trade and shipbuilding ports allowing the area to shift from an agrarian to mercantile and manufacturing way of life..
Bridgeport is located on Long Island Sound in upper Fairfield County, within reasonable traveling distances to cultural events in Connecticut and New York City. The cities of New Haven and Hartford are 23 and 56 miles respectively, while New York City is 60 miles away and an easy commute on the Metro North train line.

GOD'S MISSION;
God's mission is the restoration and reconciliation of all people to unity with God and each other in Christ.
EPISCOPAL MISSION:
We are a parish of the Episcopal Diocese of Connecticut, a member of the Episcopal Church USA, which in turn belongs to the worldwide fellowship of national churches call the Anglican Communion. As such, we are anchored in a faith tradition that stretches back to the original Apostles of Jesus, and has been handed down to us by their successors in every generation. Thus, as an Episcopal Church we are connected not only by Christians who have loved and served the Lord in ages past, but also to those throughout the world who accept the call to the Body of Christ on earth in this present time.
ST JOHN'S MISSION:
St. John's is a community seeking to extend the ministry of Christ in a variety of ways, including the ministry of prayer for healing.
More Information: If you would like to learn more about the doctrine, discipline, and worship of the Episcopal Church, come join us any Sunday for one of our worship services.

St. John’s Episcopal Church is the oldest Christian congregation in the City of Bridgeport. Founded in 1738 in the village of Stratfield, St. John’s Episcopal Church moved to the Borough of Bridgeport when the latter was incorporated in 1801. A wooden church was built at the corner of State and Broad Streets, followed by a larger stone church, at Broad and Cannon Streets, built in 1838. The current church, at the corner of Fairfield and Park Avenues, was constructed in 1873-1875, with a chapel wing on the north side added in 1886-1888. The church was designed by James Renwick, the architect of St Patrick Cathedral in New York. The church’s tower was completed 1893, when the building, by then free of debt, was formally dedicated. The interior has been remodeled at different times over the years. It has reredos designed by sculptor Gutzon Borglum, sculpture of the Mount Rushmore National Memorial, and installed in 1913.
